GM Ignition Switch Death Toll Reaches 80

The number of deaths officially acknowledged under GM’s ignition switch compensation program reached 80 today.

The compensation fund that GM hired Kenneth Feinberg to oversee added another three death claims to the total. Apart from death claims, the uncapped fund recognized 11 “category one” claims that include victims quadriplegia, paraplegia, double amputation, permanent brain damage or pervasive burns to date. It also includes 137 officially recognized “category two” claims for physical injuries requiring hospitalization or outpatient medical treatment within 48 hours of the accident.

Since the fund began accepting submissions, people have submitted a total of 4,342, of which there are still 1,246 under review. There are currently another 91 death claims pending review. The fund stopped accepting new applications on January 31.
