NHTSA Head Meeting with Detroit Big Three

The new top U.S. auto safety official will be meeting with the Detroit Big Three.

Mark Rosekind, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will meet with General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Ford CEO Mark Fields and a group of senior executives from Fiat Chrysler as CEO Sergio Marchionne is out of the country. The main purpose of the sessions are meet-and-greets according to Rosekind, but he will discuss NHTSA’s safety expectations and to delivery a very clear message: “that if there are problems that require enforcement we are going to use every tool available,” he said.

Since taking over NHTSA, Rosekind has requested that automakers adopt a more “proactive” safety culture and is pushing automakers to make sure all recalled vehicles are fixed, compared to around 75 percent today. Last year was a record-setting year for recalls with over 60 million units called back. Major recalls from 2014 include the GM ignition switch fiasco and exploding airbags manufactured by Takata.
