Nissan Expands Takata Airbag Recall in U.S.

Nissan is expanding a recall over faulty Takata airbags. 

Last month, a woman in a 2006 Nissan Sentra sedan was injured when shrapnel from the deploying airbag struck her. Now, the recall is being expanded to cover 2004 to 2006 Sentras that weren’t part of an earlier regional recall, as a Nissan spokesman claims that before the accident, the company didn’t have enough data to support a recall of those models.

The woman involved in the crash also alleges that the passenger side airbag went off even though no one was in the seat.

Since 2008, 24 million vehicles have bee recalled globally to fix faulty Takata airbag inflators which can deploy with too much force, throwing shrapnel at the occupants. At least five deaths and 100 injuries have occurred as a result.

Back in 2013, Nissan brought back 438,000 cars to replace the airbag inflators. That recall expanded to an additional 226,000 last June, but it still did not cover the 2004-2006 Sentra. A separate regional recall did call back the 2004 to 2006 Sentra, but not every model was brought back in.
