VW Routan Ignition Switch Recall Extended
Volkswagen is extending a recall for 20,000 Routan minivans.
It affects certain vans from the 2009 and 2010 model years. The issue is with the ignition switch, which can inadvertently switch the vehicle off, disabling systems like airbags, power steering and braking. No accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of this issue.
Until the vehicles are fixed, VW says that drivers should take any extra weight off their key rings.
This recall is an extension of two previous recalls, one which called back the 2010 Routan and the other which affected the 2009 Routan. In the first recall, 2,155 Routans had a detent plunger fitted as there wasn’t enough ignition switches to complete the recall. In the second recall, 18,520 detent plungers were fitted. Now, NHTSA has said that the detent plunger fix isn’t enough and each van needs a fully replaced ignition switch.
VW says the 2009 model-year parts will be fitted this month while the 2010 models will be fixed in August.
