2015 GMC Canyon Long-Term Review: Fitting Into Tight Spaces

I love pickup trucks and were it not for the fact that I also live in one of North America’s most populous cities, there would probably be one sitting in my driveway.
Truth be told, a half-ton is less practical in downtown Toronto than trying to skin a deer with a machete. Sometimes smaller is better and that’s why I jumped at the chance to steal Steve’s truck for a few days to help my dad move a big tube TV and a dilapidated piano to the dump.
The only trouble is that we’re both pretty small guys, so we needed a practical way to move that material into the truck bed. His condo building has a trash room with a loading dock that is accessible through a narrow alley and a small garage door that aren’t large enough for a Silverado, Ram or F-150.
By now, you’ve probably guessed that the Canyon is just narrow enough to fit. It took what felt like a million-point-turn to successfully back the truck in.
I probably couldn’t have done it without the rear-view camera and a couple of people shouting “stop,” but it fit, showing off the usefulness a small truck can have over a larger half-ton.
Incidentally, the Canyon is small but it isn’t tiny. The night before I helped my dad lug junk out of his apartment, my sister and I also loaded a small mountain of bags, books, an office-size printer, large paintings, a bar fridge and a bike into the bed and cab. It probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but the Canyon is still big enough to carry an entire dorm room and two people.
