2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup Car Testing Nearly Complete

Mazda is working to finalize the setup for its new latest MX-5 Cup Car.

The Japanese automaker will test the new cup car in public during the first day of testing for the remaining 2015 MX-5 Cup season at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Specifications and pricing for the Mazda MX-5 Cup Car will be announced this summer.

Currently Mazda is evaluating a total of 392 different possible combinations for the car, including evaluating seven different tire manufacturers, eight brake suppliers and seven suspension setups. Each setup will be tested by a computer model and then transferred to the race car for rear world validation.

Testing is being done by Mazda prototype driver Tom Long along with Mazda racers Kenton Koch and Andrew Carbonell. “Testing the new MX-5 racer for the Global MX-5 Cup has been an incredible fit so far,” said Long. “The lightweight nimble chassis design, along with its increased power-to-weight ratio, makes this new platform balanced and a real thrill to drive. Taking the key elements that made the original MX-5 chassis so popular and successful, has come back to its roots in a reborn look.”
