GM Compensation Fund Nears Total of 300 Approved Claims
The official death toll linked to the General Motors‘ ignition switch recall has reached 104.
The GM compensation fund has approved seven new injury claims and four new death claims last week, bringing the total number of approved claims to 295.
Of the 191 injury claims approved so far, a dozen are for serious injuries while 179 are for less severe injuries. Last year, the American automaker initially said that 13 deaths were linked to the ignition switch recall “based on information available to the company at the time,” according to GM. That claim “was based on a thorough review by engineers of the facts and circumstances of each crash, including any available technical information recorded by the vehicle’s on-board computer.”

The total number of claims submitted by the January 31, 2015 deadline reached 4,342 and included 474 death claims. According to the GM compensation fund, a total of 495 claims are still under review, 26 of which are death claims. Of the claims submitted, the GM compensation fund has ruled 2,094 ineligible, including 244 deaths. The company also noted that of the claims submitted, 80 were missing documentation.
The GM compensation fund’s deputy fund administrator, Camille Biros, hopes the fund will complete its review of all outstanding claims by the end of July.
