Jaguar Land Rover Wants Eye-Controlled Wipers

Jaguar Land Rover wants a future where your eyes control the windshield wipers.

The British automaker has been awarded a patent called “windscreen clearing system for a vehicle,” which will trigger the rear-window wipers every time the driver looks in their rearview mirror. The patent filing also hints that the company could potentially be working on applying the technology to the front windshield wipers. Originally filed in March 2013, the patent was awarded this week and likely uses the eye-tracking Driver Monitor System (DMS) that the British automaker unveiled earlier this year.

The company has been working with Intel and Seeing Machines to develop sensing technology that monitors the driver’s face and eyes to reduce distracted and drowsy driving. Jaguar Land Rover first demonstrated that technology at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on an F-Type.
