Next BMW M5 Spied in Early Stages of Testing

The next-generation 5 Series isn’t available yet, but BMW is already in the early stages of developing the M5.

AutoGuide.com‘s spy photographers have caught this early next-generation BMW M5 prototype testing and although it’s missing several of the trademark M goodies, the quad-exhaust setup in the rear as well as the bigger brakes hint that it’s not a standard 5 Series model.

It is likely that this is a very early prototype because the mule is missing many of the aesthetic characteristics that are typical of a BMW M productlike the wider fenders and more aggressive styling. There is also a visible electric charging port on the front fender, but that is probably just a byproduct of the fact that this is an engineering prototype borrowing a 5 Series body.

While it seems unlikely that the new M5 will be a plug-in hybrid, it is expected to arrive with optional all-wheel drive equipment to compete more directly with the Audi RS6 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. There’s no confirmation yet about when the next-generation 5 Series will make its debut, but expect it at either the 2016 Geneva Motor Show or the 2016 Beijing Motor Show.
