Zagato Previews Custom Maserati Mostro

Zagato has released the first images of what it will debut at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Called the Maserati Mostro, the Italian coachbuilder will pay tribute to one of the most iconic racing cars in Maserati’s history, the Maserati 450 S Coupe Zagato “Monster” that was designed in 1957 with Frank Costin, a specialist in aerodynamics. The Monster was originally coachbuilt in Milan for the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the request of Stirling Moss boasting 400 hp from a Maserati V8 engine. As a result, the Zagato Maserati Mostro continues the theme of an exotic race car with classic lines and will be powered by a Maserati-sourced V8 engine.

According to Zagato, the chassis of the Mostro will be a MonoCell of carbon fiber paired to a mid-structure of steel tubes for the cockpit and subframe that sustains the fuel tank, exhaust system, rear suspension and transmission. The bodywork will be crafted entirely from carbon fiber in Italy while the V8 Maserati engine will be paired to a semi-automatic, six-speed transmission. Large disc brakes will be found up front while 19-inch wheels will be bolted on all four corners.

Only five examples of the Zagato Maserati Mostro will be produced and each one has already been spoken for by selected Zagato car collectors. Deliveries on the Mostro will begin this December, at the end of Maserati’s anniversary year.
