2010 Chevy Tahoe Under Investigation for Airbag Issue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reviewing a defect petition filed for the 2010 Chevy Tahoe.

The petition was originally filed in August, seeking a formal investigation into the 2010 Chevy Tahoe for possible issues with its side curtain airbags. NHTSA has announced that it is reviewing whether the side curtain airbags in 58,000 Tahoe SUVs fail to prevent passengers from being ejected in an accident.

According to the petition, “defects allow second and third row occupants to be ejected despite the deployment of rollover side curtain airbags. The petition cites a 2011 Texas crash involving a model year 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe, which allegedly resulted in multiple occupants to be ejected. One of the ejected occupants was fatally injured.”

The agency’s preliminary review of customer complaint data and Early Warning Reporting data from GM found no similar reports of occupant ejections on 2007-2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. It will be up to NHTSA on whether it’ll open a formal investigation into the issue.

GM has responded saying that it’ll cooperate with the defect petition and has “investigated the complaint that is the basis of the petition and found no defect trend.”
