Tesla Turns to Owners to Beta Test Autopilot Features

Tesla is rolling out its Autopilot feature to a select few owners for beta testing.

The American automaker will begin uploading Autopilot to Model S sedans tomorrow, to a hand picked selection of owners who will report back to the company on how the system works. In particular, Tesla wants to know how drivers will react to the Autopilot and its interface.

Autopilot 7.0 will allow the Model S to keep itself in a lane and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front by handling acceleration and braking. The driver will have to remain alert to what is going on according to Tesla.

“We don’t want to set the expectation that you can basically pay no attention to what the car is doing,” said Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO and CTO. Musk says that the system really shines when following and tracking a vehicle in front of it.
