Nissan Will Introduce Self-Driving Technology by 2017

Nissan will begin rolling out its self-driving technologies by 2017.

The news comes from vice president of vehicle design and development, David Moss, who confirmed to Autocar that the Japanese automaker is testing autonomous technology that will eventually result in a completely self-driving electric vehicle for Nissan. In the coming years, Nissan will slowly introduce technologies that not only improve safety but will take away the “less attractive bits of driving, like sitting in traffic jams,” said Moss.

Like other automakers, Nissan will start with a single-lane “traffic jam mode” that will function up to a certain speed before adding a highway mode that covers multi-lane capabilities a few years later.

The autonomous features will likely debut in Nissan’s crossover models first before heading down to the rest of the vehicles in the company’s lineup. Ultimately, Nissan wants to couple self-driving technology with its already-developed electric technology to help ease growing traffic density as well as reducing pollution levels worldwide. Reducing pollution has become an interesting topic in recent weeks now that the Volkswagen diesel scandal has broken out.
