Ram SUV Under Consideration as Ford Expedition Fighter
Ram is considering a large SUV model to take on the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Suburban.
Speaking during a conference call to share the company’s third-quarter financial results, CEO Sergio Marchionne expressed his interest saying that a potential full-sized SUV was a possibility for the Ram brand. According to Marchionne, the large SUV segment is “the near-exclusive use of some others. We have a reasonable chance of getting at least part of the market.”
Ever since Ram was separated from Dodge to distinguish its pickups and commercial vehicles in the marketplace, it has never offered an SUV model. As the lineup gets ready for a redesign, Marchionne says there is room for an SUV and is exploring the idea.

The move makes sense, considering the Jeep brand also falls under FCA so it’s not like the automaker is entirely clueless on how to develop a proper SUV. A Ram offering wouldn’t compete with the upcoming three-row Jeep Grand Wagoneer, although that has been delayed until 2019. Jeep is developing the Grand Wagoneer as a luxury model to compete with the likes of Range Rover, while the Ram SUV would be more like the Chevrolet Suburban and Ford Expedition.
