All-Electric Volvo Will Arrive in 2019 to Compete with Tesla

Volvo is focusing on electrifying its entire lineup.

The Swedish automaker has announced that it will eventually introduce plug-in hybrids across its entire range as well as develop an entirely new range of electrified compact cars. By 2019, Volvo will also offer an all-electric vehicle to compete with Tesla. As part of the new strategy, Volvo estimates that electrified vehicles will account for up to 10 percent of its total sales in the medium term.

The strategy has already begun with the plug-in hybrid variant of the new XC90 SUV, and with plug-in hybrid models of the new S90 sedan being next on the agenda. With the new 90 and 60 series models being built on the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture, the 60 series will also benefit with electrified variants once they’re introduced.

The entirely new range of compact cars will be part of the company’s 40 series lineup, underpinned by a newly developed Compact Modular Architecture that is being designed from the outset for electrification.

“We believe that the time has come for electrified cars to cease being a niche technology and enter the mainstream,” said president and CEO of Volvo Cars, Håkan Samuelsson. “We are confident that by 2020, 10 per cent of Volvo’s global sales will be electrified cars.”
