Next-Gen Nissan GT-R May Not Arrive Until 2020
It looks like the next-generation Nissan GT-R won’t arrive for at least five more years.
“To be honest the company is not even talking about it,” Nissan Australia’s managing director told Motoring. When asked when the car would show up, he said “It’s certainly not 2018, and I can’t even see it in 2019. It’s not on the product plan list for that period.” Up until now, the redesigned GT-R was believed to be slated for a 2018 release.
When the new GT-R arrives, it will use some type of hybrid system, though it will remain a front-engine, rear-wheel drive platform. The car will borrow design cues from Nissan’s 2020 Vision GT Concept, while power numbers for the new car have already been estimated around 780 hp and 730 lb-ft of torque.

To keep the current GT-R fresh, a tough feat considering it’s been on sale since 2008, Nissan has continually been upping its performance. When it first arrived, the car make 480 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque while costing about $70,000. Today, the 2016 GT-R sells for $103,000 and makes 545 hp and 463 lb-ft of torque, not to mention the NISMO version of the car which makes 600 hp.
Nissan says that even more improvements and upgrades can be expected for the current generation GT-R to keep it relevant before the new car arrives.
