Ford F-150 Diesel Caught Testing in Spy Video

The diesel pickup truck market is set for a new competitor: the Ford F-150.

A new spy video has caught an F-150 prototype testing on the streets of Oakwood, MI with the unmistakable diesel rumble coming from under the hood.

Rumor has it that it will be a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel that was developed by Ford and Land Rover before the brands split up. The engine is currently used in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, where it makes 254 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque.

In the F-150, the engine could possibly be to mated to Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission, which will launch later this year in the 2017 Raptor. A hybrid F-150 is also a possibility, though it won’t likely launch until around 2020.

When it comes to names, the F-150 diesel won’t use the EcoBoost badge, as that specifically denotes a gasoline engine. “Not going to speculate about future products,” said Ford trucks communications manager Mike Levine. “If you look at Ford diesels, they are called Power Strokes.”

The diesel is expected to join the lineup sometime in 2017.
