There’s a Strange New Commercial for the Rebooted DeLorean

Brand-new DeLorean DMC-12 coupes are expected to arrive in early 2017 and DMC Texas has started the marketing campaign.

The company has released its first commercial to promote DeLorean’s return to the market and it’s as strange as the car itself. Titled “Lucky Coin,” the commercial features a young man walking towards a DeLorean that open its driver’s door all by itself, inviting him inside. Once he enters the car and closes the door, the song “Make You Happy” begins to play.

Then it cuts to some standard footage of the DeLorean driving through scenic roads on a winding canyon before he pulls over on top of a cliff. Looking out to the world, the events of finding the DeLorean and driving it flashes through his mind before he pulls out a half-dollar and throws it over the side of the cliff. The words “I lived as slowly as I could…” then appear on the screen.

Considering the DeLorean DMC-12 is one of the most well-known vehicles in the world thanks to being used as a time machine in the Back to the Future movies, it’s a bit strange that the commercial would stray so far from what made it a pop culture phenomenon.
