Will Volkswagen succeed where Nissan failed with a convertible crossover?
We’re not quite sure if the world is ready for another affordable convertible crossover now that the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet is a thing of the past. But hey, Land Rover is trying with the Range Rover Evoque convertible, so why can’t Volkswagen?
Making its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show is the Volkswagen T-Cross Breeze concept, and once you get past its name, it’s surprisingly not a bad looking crossover. Whether or not it actually makes it into production is another story.

At least in concept form, the T-Cross Breeze concept is powered by a small 1.0-liter turbocharged engine with 110 horsepower and 129 pound-feet of torque paired to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It’s not screaming performance, but the compact size allows the convertible crossover to weigh in at 2,756 pounds. The result is a zero-to-62 mph time of 10.3 seconds.
Volkswagen is in a bit of a pickle these days with its massive diesel scandal. In a way, the T-Cross Breeze concept is helping signal a new era for the brand. The company is calling it “New Volkswagen” so don’t be surprised to see some peculiar models joining the lineup.
