Maserati Recalls 13K Sedans Over Tricky Gear Shift

Maserati is the latest Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) brand to recall vehicles over the design and operation of the gear selector.

About 13,092 Quattroporte and Ghibli sedans are being recalled as drivers can mistakenly believe that the vehicle is in park, causing it to roll away.

Back in April, FCA recalled 1.1 million vehicles over this same problem as they use the same style of gear selector. The gearshift acts like a joystick, always returning back to the center position after the gear is selected. This has lead to many case of drivers mistakenly thinking that the vehicle is in park.

The 2012-2014 Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300 and 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is affected by the first recall.

That earlier recall was linked to 41 injuries, 212 crashes and 308 reports of property damage. A roll away of a Jeep Grand Cherokee is also being investigated as the likely cause of death for actor Anton Yelchin.

Maserati says that no injuries, crashes or roll aways have been reported in its vehicles. A software re-flash, that has just been rolled out for the Jeep Grand Cherokee, will likely remedy the problem.
