FCA is Pouring $1B into Jeep Plant Upgrades

Jeep is getting ready to build its next-generation Wrangler.

Parent company Fia Chrysler Automobiles has announced a $1.05-billion investment to retool the Jeep Wrangler factory in Toledo, Ohio, as well as another site in Illinois.

The Ohio factory will receive $700 million so that the next-generation Wrangler can be built, and the investment is expected to add around 700 new jobs. The Wrangler factory is part of a larger complex in Ohio, and the American automaker said that plans for the South factory will be announced at a later date.

The other factory in Belvidere, Illinois will receive a $350 million for upgrades, potentially adding another 300 jobs to the site. That factory will focus on producing the Jeep Cherokee, which will be moving to Illinois in 2017. Currently, FCA builds the Dodge Dart, Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass in Belvidere, but all three are being discontinued.

The investments are a move to focus on strengthening the Jeep brand, which has continued to do well for FCA.
