All-Electric Subaru Crossover Could Arrive by 2021

Subaru’s first all-electric vehicle is rumored to arrive in the U.S. by 2021. 

According to Japan’s Nikkan Kogyo Shimbu, Subaru is plotting the release of an all-wheel drive, all-electric midsize crossover that will be reminiscent of the Forester and the Outback. The new crossover will be based on Subaru’s all-new global platform (pictured above) that is slowly replacing all of Subaru’s current platforms.

A spokesman from Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries told Automotive News that the company has “yet to decide on any specifics at the moment.”

Thanks to a lineup of gas thirsty all-wheel drive crossovers and SUVs, Subaru needs to bring electrification into its U.S. lineup to help meet government mandated fuel economy standards.

Subaru has previously disclosed its plan to bring a plug-in hybrid vehicle to the U.S. market, also to help meet new fuel economy regulations. It is expected to arrive by 2018.
