43

The Toyota TJ Cruiser concept could spawn a production version if consumer interest is strong.

Speaking to Autocar, Toyota chief designer Hirokazu Ikuma confirmed the automaker is looking at putting the TJ Cruiser into production and selling it globally. It will attempt to gauge the consumers’ reaction and interest in the concept at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month and will make a decision based on its findings at a later date.

The production TJ Cruiser (TJ stands for ‘Toolbox Joy’, by the way) would likely be based on Toyota’s TGNA modular vehicle architecture. Details on the engine weren’t provided, but engineers close to the project said the active lifestyle vehicle could feature a gasoline-hybrid powertrain. Its square, boxy shape and flat-folding seats would make it perfect for hauling goods and its off-road-ready suspension and tough body panels mean it would be up for just about any outdoor activity.

Following the Tokyo Motor Show, the TJ Cruiser will be ferried around the world, where Toyota will display it in a series of customer clinics. This will provide the automaker with further intel on potential interest in the car before it makes its final decision. Would you like to see the TJ Cruiser in Toyota dealers?
