Spy Photographers Catch Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Testing

Now that the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS models have been introduced, it’s time for the Cayman GT4 to make a bow.

Our spy photographers have caught the new Cayman GT4 testing for the first time and rumor has it it could be debut before year’s end. The German automaker loves making a splash at the L.A. Auto Show, so don’t be surprised if all the details come at the end of this month. Considering the Cayman GTS sports 365 horsepower and the old Cayman GT4 has 385 hp, the new GT4 will likely have around 400 hp.

Head of Porsche’s GT models, Andreas Preuninger, has confirmed the new Cayman GT4 won’t be turbocharged like the other 718 Cayman models. Instead, Porsche is expected to keep it a purists’ dream by using a detuned version of the new 4.0-liter flat-six engine found in the 911 GT3. Another possibility is updating the 3.8-liter flat-six engine found in the older GT4, but that’s unlikely since the model has been retired.

The good news is, it will retain a manual transmission as standard, although a PDK could be added to the lineup as an option.

If Porsche decides not to surprise everyone by debuting the Cayman GT4 at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show, look for it to bow early 2018 considering the prototype is testing without any camouflage.
