Watch the new Tesla Roadster Accelerate and Go Into Plaid

5

Last night, Tesla shocked the EV world with the debut of its second-generation Roadster.

The new Tesla Roadster is all about insane numbers. It makes an unbelievable 10,000 Nm of torque between its three electric motors, which enables a claimed 0-60 mph time of 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 mph. With a large 200 kWh battery pack, the four-seat sports coupe will also be capable of traveling up to 620 miles on a single charge.

That might sound like vaporware, but Tesla does, in fact, have a real, working prototype for its second-gen Roadster. We doubt the prototype is making the full claimed output, or that it’s capable of the performance figures mentioned above, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fast.

In the video embedded above, a Tesla employee gives some giggly Tesla fans a ride in the Roadster prototype, shocking them with its insane acceleration. This prompts one of the passengers to joke that it goes into “plaid” – a reference to the famous scene from Spaceballs. It doesn’t look as though this was a 1.9s run to 60 mph, but it still looked damn quick.

We’re excited to see the production version of the Roadster arrive in 2020, but for now, you can watch it go “full plaid” in the video embedded above.
