Ferrari Confirms an SUV is Coming Sooner Than Later

What was once an impossible thought will become a reality by 2020.

There was once a time Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) CEO Sergio Marchionne said someone would have to shoot him before Ferrari made an SUV. But a year later, those words held little meaning once rumors began that Ferrari was developing an SUV. And now, at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, Marchionne confirmed the Ferrari Utility Vehicle – FUV – is in development, and he’s even seen mock up bodies for it.

Earlier reports said a decision on Ferrari’s SUV would come by 2020, but now the vehicle itself may be introduced by the end of 2019, or the beginning of 2020. Marchionne wouldn’t share very many details about it, but did say it will be the fastest vehicle of its type. “It will look like whatever a Ferrari utility vehicle needs to look like,” he said. “But it has to drive like a Ferrari.”

When touching on the subject of being the fastest SUV, Marchionne pointed to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, saying that he doesn’t believe “Ferrari fears Alfa.” Of course there’s the Lamborghini Urus now that’s even faster with its twin-turbo V8 engine, so it’s more likely Ferrari will target the Urus than the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

With the Bentley Bentayga now available and the Urus on the horizon, along with the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the high-performance, luxury SUV segment is starting to take shape.
