Forget the ‘Ring, Watch Where the Mercedes G-Class Goes Testing

Before Mercedes-Benz officially unveils the new G-Class, the German automaker is making sure everyone knows it remains a “true G.”

While sports cars use the Nürburgring race track for testing and even bragging rights, the G-Class had to conquer the Schöckl. It’s a 1,445-meter high local mountain near the Austrian city of Graz, and the German automaker sees it as a test track for the G-Class. The nearly 3.5-mile (5.6-kilometer) route includes gradients of up to 60 percent and lateral inclinations of up to 40 percent. Although the video is rather short, Mercedes-Benz reassures us the new G-Class “masters the route with noticeably more control and comfort,” presumably compared to its predecessor.

Photos of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class leaked earlier, ahead of its official debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. The rugged SUV rides on a standard ladder-type frame and features three 100-percent differential locks and low range off-road ratio.

Expect more details to be released in the coming weeks on the new G-Class before its big roll out in Detroit.
