Toyota Might Build a True FJ Cruiser Successor After All

32

Toyota has been toying with FJ Cruiser enthusiasts for years now, but their wish might finally come true.

Last year, the Japanese automaker debuted two concepts that had people wondering if a true FJ Cruiser successor was being considered. But the FT-4X Concept turned out to be disappointing for those hoping to see a serious off-roader, while the more recent FT-AC Concept offers a little more hope. Before you think Toyota has given up on the idea of an off-road SUV, however, you’ll be pleased to hear that’s not the case.

“There’s room for an authentic small off-road SUV,” Toyota Motor North America CEO Jim Lentz told Motor Trend in an interview. “Everyone moved out of the segment because of truck CAFE ratings. But we’re getting a lot of requests from folks who want another FJ or some variant.”

So, yes, the automaker is likely going to build a compact, off-road SUV that’s similar to the FJ Cruiser, but on a smaller wheelbase to compete with the Jeep Wrangler.

Lentz added that the recent concepts are “along the lines” of a 4WD vehicle Toyota wants to have in its lineup, but it would be in addition to the RAV4. “There is room on the lower end, in terms of price or authenticity, for an off-road, frame-based SUV.” More importantly, Lentz emphasized that this new model would be frame-based and with a small wheelbase so it’s more maneuverable when in the rocks. “There difference is in wheel travel, and you can only do that with frame-based,” he said.

Unfortunately, he wouldn’t provide a timeframe when such a model would arrive, but it does seem like Toyota is receptive to the idea and is seriously considering it.
