Canada is Getting the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Hatch and America Isn’t

2

Daimler has confirmed the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatchback will be sold in North America – however it will be coming to Canada only.

Speaking to our colleagues at The Truth About Cars, Mercedes-Benz confirmed the A-Class hatchback will be headed to Canadian Mercedes dealers and not American ones. Consumers south of the border will have to live with the new A-Class sedan, which has yet to be unveiled but will be mechanically identical to the hatchback. The sedan’s styling was previewed by the Mercedes Concept A at last year’s Shanghai auto show.

“Our U.S. colleagues have already confirmed that they will only sell the sedan version of the A-Class,” said Mercedes-Benz Canada president and CEO Brian D. Fulton. “Both hatchback and sedan versions will be available in Canada; we will share more information about the sedan later this year.”

This isn’t the first time Canada has received a hatchback that America hasn’t. Daimler sold the B-Class Electric Drive in Canada and not in the US, and the Kia Rondo and Nissan Micra were also sold north of the border. It seems Canadian consumers are a bit more hip to hatchback and wagon body styles than Americans, who typically prefer crossovers, SUVs, trucks and sedans to compacts like the A-Class hatch.
