Jeep Committed to High-Performance, Sand-Running Models

The Jeep Deserthawk trim level is making a return.

In revealing its five-year plan, Jeep confirmed it will reintroduce the Deserthawk trim that will be more capable on sand in the first quarter of 2020. The American automaker included an image of what to expect, and it appears the Cherokee Deserthawk will be the first of the new products.

Currently there aren’t any Deserthawk offerings, but there was a Renegade Deserthawk available for the 2017 model year. That package however, wasn’t very performance oriented, with mostly cosmetic upgrades. It was added onto the Trailhawk trim and included special paint and graphics, rock rails, a four-pin wiring harness, a Class III towing package, and a Rock Mode in the adjustable Selec-Terrain drive system.

The next time we see a Deserthawk model, however, it will be a bit more serious. Jeep says Deserthawk models will feature “ultimate high-speed sand-running capability” set by “eight desert-specific engineering standards.” Considering the first new Deserthawk model isn’t arriving until 2020, it’s little surprise Jeep didn’t provide more details.
