John Cena Reaches Settlement in Ford GT Lawsuit

John Cena has reached a settlement with Ford Motor Company after the automaker sued him for selling his 2017 Ford GT.

Ford required all buyers of the limited-run GT supercar to sign a contract that would bar them from selling the vehicle for at least two years. This was done in order to limit access to the first 500 examples of the vehicle to those who would use them as they were intended, instead of flipping them for a profit.

Cena applied to receive the vehicle and took delivery of it last September, but sold it just a month later to a California-based dealership. Ford filed a lawsuit against Cena in November for breaking the conditions of the contract and sought $75,000 in damages. The automaker also sued the dealership, New Autos Inc. in Chico, California.

Cena and Ford have now reached a settlement, with Ford saying it will donate the money it received from the lawsuit to charity. The well-liked pro wrestler had originally sought to have the suit thrown out, saying the dealership he purchased the vehicle from “included no resale restriction in the sales agreement.”

In a statement, Cena apologized for selling the vehicle and encouraged other Ford GT owners to respect the guidelines in the purchasing contract.

“I love the Ford GT and apologize to Ford, and encourage others who own the car to respect the contract,” said Cena. “I am pleased we could resolve this matter outside of court, and that a worthy charity will benefit from one of the most iconic cars in the world.”
