Mercedes-AMG Readying Porsche Cayman Rival
Mercedes-AMG is preparing a new sports car model that will slot below the existing GT.
According to a recent report, Mercedes-AMG is working on a rival to the Porsche 718 Cayman, with a possible mid-rear engine layout and styling inspired by the Project One hypercar. The new model would serve as an indirect successor to the SLC, as a two-seater coupe and convertible luxury sports car.
Autocar says the Cayman rival is currently in a conceptual stage, but has been presented to Mercedes-Benz’s board of management. If the project does get green lit, it would eventually slot below the GT.

The sports car is being proposed with two standard power outputs, likely borrowing from the upcoming A35 and A45 models with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The new offering is rumored to share certain elements with the next-generation SL, which AMG is helping engineer.
Another possibility is that the new AMG sports car could share components with the latest-generation Mercedes compact models with the potential of mild-hybrid setups.
This would be the fifth dedicated AMG model in the company’s lineup, joining the SLS, GT, GT Four-Door, and the upcoming Project One hypercar.
