GM Could Have a ‘Sport Control AWD’ System on the Way

GM has just put in for a new all-wheel drive system. Or at least a trademark for a new name for an all-wheel drive system.

The filing from last week specifies the trademark Sport Control AWD. It’s to be used for all-wheel drive systems, electronic stability control systems, steering systems, traction control systems, suspension systems…you get the picture.

We’re not sure if the new name will go with an all-new system or if it’s just a rebranding of existing systems. The latest GM system that uses a twin-clutch electronic all-wheel drive system, like on the Buick Enclave Avenir, could desperately use a name to distinguish it from lesser vehicles, so it might work here.

As far as AWD systems go, Sport Control AWD isn’t a bad name. Look at competing systems like Honda/Acura’s Super-Handling, Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control. Though it’s not as cool as Audi’s quattro. Sorry, GM fans, no AWD system will have as cool of a name as quattro. But Sport Control ain’t bad.
