Ford Recalls Nearly 1.5M Focuses for Gas Tank Defect

Ford is recalling 1.46 million Ford Focuses produced between 2012 and 2018 for a defect in the gas tank that could lead to stalling.

The recall affects Focuses powered by the 2.0-liter GDI and 2.0-liter GTDI engines.

The problem is being caused by a defective canister purge valve that can become stuck in the open position, causing the gas tank to deform.

That can, in turn, cause the Focus to stall and then fail to start. If you’ve noticed an indicator light or a wonky fuel gauge, your car may be affected.

Ford recommends that affected Focus owners keep their cars more than half-full until a fix has been made.

Customers will be notified and repairs—including new software and a new canister purge valve—will be made for free.
