Chrysler Mid-Size SUVs Recalled for Failing Fuel Pump

Chrysler is recalling 230,760 of its SUVs for a possible fuel pump issue.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango are being recalled because their fuel pump relays may fail, potentially preventing the engine from starting or cause the engine to stall out. According to the recall notice, the relay is located in the Totally Integrated Power Module that manages other vehicle functions, but airbag deployment is not affected by the faulty relays.

The problem actually lies in a spring that can deform from excessive heat and the issue was discovered during internal testing last year. The result from a pattern of repairs involving the fuel pump problem began the investigation. Of the recalled vehicles 188,723 are in the U.S. while 15,898 are in Canada and 7,126 are in Mexico. The remaining 19,013 are in other regions worldwide.

The American automaker has not announced when the recall will begin but that it will notify owners when to schedule a free vehicle service to resolve the issue.
