2016 BMW 7 Series to Debut New Modular Engine Family

BMW is looking to make its 7 Series more competitive in the luxury sedan segment.

The current BMW 7 Series has lost some ground to the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class but the German automaker is looking to resolve that when its sixth-generation model hits the market. Recently spied testing with what appears to be laser headlights, the 2016 BMW 7 Series will reportedly use carbon fiber in order to save weight, much thanks to the research and development of BMW’s i sub-brand of vehicles.

Though a more sophisticated and elegant design is expected along with a lighter body, what will really make the 7 Series a major introduction for BMW will be its powerplants. According to a recent report, the new 7 Series will be the first model using an inline six-cylinder engine from the German automaker’s new modular engine family that will also include three-, four- and six-cylinder engines in both gasoline and diesel variants. Not only will these new powerplants be cheaper to produce, the company is aiming to set new benchmarks in performance and refinement.

BMW is also considering using a four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor for a 7 Series hybrid that will make around 300 hp.
