One in Five Cars Recalled in US this Year
It’s a record-setting year for car recalls thanks to General Motors.
With 52 million recalled vehicles in 2014 so far, that’s roughly the equivalent of one in every five cars on U.S. roadways being recalled. GM has led the way this year with over half of the industry’s recalls – a total of 26.5-million vehicles so far. Its massive ignition switch recall is now linked to 27 deaths and that number could increase before the end of the year.

According to Stericycle, which helps automakers manage the recall process, there have been 544 separate recalls so far in 2014, which averages to about two a day. The previous record high for recalls was 30.8-million vehicles in 2004. Most recently, Chrysler recalled 900,000 vehicles for two separate issues as automakers are becoming more proactive in finding defects, even if they’re minor.
