Tesla Set to Unveil New Home Battery Pack

These days, Tesla is working on more than just cars.

CEO Elon Musk revealed that Tesla has been developing a consumer battery pack for home use and that the design of the new battery is complete with production beginning in six months. The company still hasn’t decided when the unit will debut, but Musk said he is excited with the results during the company’s earnings call.

So how exactly does an automotive company find a way to develop products for the home? Well, given that Tesla specializes in electric vehicles, it’s not a far stretch that the technology could be incorporated for home use. The Toyota Mirai, for example, can have its battery removed to act as an electric power supply for a home. When fully charge, that battery can reportedly power the average home for a week. Other vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf, can be used as a backup generator for emergencies.
