2016 Audi A4 2.0L Engine Detailed

Audi has revealed an updated version of its 2.0-liter TFSI engine, destined for use in the upcoming 2016 A4. 

The new version of the engine, which makes 190 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, is less powerful than the current 2.0-liter TFSI, but Audi says it will be more efficient and offer peak torque from a lower RPM thanks to a new combustion method. The brand says the engine should achieve 47 MPG, although that is on the less strict European test cycle.

The new combustion method is similar to the Miller cycle and allows higher compression ratios without fear of engine knock. It also means that each combustion cycle produces more energy.

Rather than downsizing the engine to achieve efficiency, Audi says it is rightsizing. “Thanks to this rightsizing approach, the new engine enjoys the consumption benefits of a downsizing engine in partial load operation, while at higher loads it has the advantages of a large-displacement engine,” said Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Head of Engine Development at Audi. “The result is optimal efficiency and performance characteristics across the entire engine speed range.”

The weight of the engine itself has been cut down to 308.6 lbs, while an integrated exhuast manifold and new low-friction oil also result in an efficiency boost.

The updated 2016 Audi A4 is expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.
