VW Details Updated 6.0-liter W12 TSI Engine

Volkswagen has announced details on the reworked version of its massive W12 engine.

The new W12 TSI, which is destined for use in the upcoming Bentley Bentayga, manages to crank out 600 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, a significant improvement thanks to various tweaks.

For starters, the new W12 combines Audi’s FSI direct injection with Bentley’s TMPI multi-port injection systems to deliver fuel to the cylinders more efficiently. Other changes include a new oil circuit suitable for off-road use, a new cooling system, new twin-scroll turbochargers, the addition of cylinder deactivation and a new stop/start system. Adaptive engine suspension has also been added, which uses electromagnetic actuators to counteract engine vibrations and movement.

Volkwsagen says that the engine should deliver 0 to 62 mph runs in less than four seconds, depending on which vehicle it is installed in. Top speed for the motor is rated over 186 mph.

The W12 is currently used by the Bentley Continental and Audi A8, both of which will likely adopt the new version. The Bentley Bentayga will likely host the debut for this engine.
