Decision on Ferrari’s SUV Will Come by 2020

FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne has confirmed Ferrari will make its first SUV.

Marchionne famously once said “You have to shoot me first,” in reply to a question on whether Ferrari will build an SUV. And this wasn’t something that was said years ago – it happened in 2016. So either Marchionne got shot recently and no one reported it, or the CEO realized there’s money to be made in the crossover and SUV segment, even if it is really the last thing he wants to do.

Speaking to reporters at the New York Stock Exchange, Marchionne said the Italian automaker will take about 30 months to decide on production, and it will be limited to preserve exclusivity. That means there’s a strong possibility we will see a concept for it within the next three years.

According to Bloomberg News, Ferrari will present a new five-year plan that runs through 2022 in the first quarter of 2018, so expect to hear more details on Ferrari’s SUV then.

In related news, Marchionne also revealed FCA won’t consider selling Jeep as a separate entity, curbing recent rumors. But then again, this is the same CEO that suggested Ferrari would never build a utility vehicle.
