Universal has confirmed a Fast and Furious spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham is in the works.
Those who have watched the recent films won’t be too surprised about the news, considering the two characters worked well together on screen. Recently, it was announced the ninth movie in the Fast and Furious franchise has been delayed until April 2020, making room for the spinoff film to arrive on July 26, 2019.
According to Hollywood Reporter, Chris Morgan is now writing the spinoff that will focus on Luke Hobbs, played by Johnson, and Statham’s Deckard Shaw. It’s still unclear why Fast and Furious 9 has been delayed, although sources say one reason is to accommodate potential director scheduling. It appears the franchise is looking at Justin Lin to make a return for the ninth movie.
The news of a spinoff isn’t sitting so well with Tyrese, who has been part of the franchise since the second movie. He was not shy in voicing his opinion about the spinoff in a post on social media, referring to Dwayne Johnson as a “clown” and saying he’s breaking up the Fast Family.
Vin Diesel has been trying to fan the flames with his own response, promising there’s a reason for the delay and some very exciting news will come soon. But this might be Universal’s way of pushing Johnson off of the main movies, adding to the idea that Johnson and Diesel just can’t get along.
