The world’s largest automaker, General Motors is comprised of four brands: Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC. Popular Chevy models include the Malibu and Cruze sedans, Equinox and Traverse crossovers, the Camaro and Corvette sports cars, SUVs like the Tahoe, plus the Volt and numerous trucks like the Silverado. Top selling Buick models include the Enclave, LaCrosse and Regal, while the bulk of Cadillac sales are comprised of the CTS sedan and SRX crossover. The GMC truck brand is best known for the Sierra pickup and Heavy Duty models, while more recently it has had success with crossovers like the Acadia and Terrain. Globally, GM also includes the Opel, Vauxhall and Holden brands, plus joint-ventures in China and the OnStar brand. After reorganization in 2009, General Motors shed the Hummer, Saab, Saturn and Pontiac brands, having eliminated Oldsmobile several years earlier.

GM was founded in 1908 by William C. Durant using the funds generated by purchasing Buick in 1904 and turning it into a success. GMC was acquired in 1909. Forced from the company after a failed takeover of Ford in 1910, he then helped create Chevrolet with Louis Chevrolet in 1911. That venture became so profitable that five years later he bought a majority stake in GM and a year later was back in charge.
